Halo isn’t back YET, but I think with more PlayStation and Xbox crossovers, Halo might have a larger consistent player base and thus it could mean funding is less of an issue for the studios. On top of that, they have the Unreal Engine which is an industry standard. Now they just need a team which can finger the pulse on the Halo community and appeal to core fans with little nuggets to other fandoms. It’s not about Legacy studios or anything else, they just need a passionate team who knows how to respect Halo as an IP and can develop a damn game without corporate overreach or resource limitations.

Why are people losing their jobs? Because most game devs are contractors, and it's cheaper to periodically switch out contractors with little to no benefits than to have full time staff. That's why layoffs happen even when there are record breaking profits. Those profits don't change the fact that switching contractors is cheaper than full time employees. The people in charge don't just want success. They don't even just want money. They want ALL the money. No amount of profits will change this behavior without law and unionization. They won't stop unless they're FORCED to stop

Last time i checked, doing a million crossovers in a desperate, feeble attempt to stay relevant, is the farthest a series can get from being "back". Halo cant stand on its own anymore without nostalgia baiting the redditor fanbase its fostered. Having been a huge fan of Sins of a Solar Empire -Trinity (PC) back in the day, seeing a Halo-themed space combat sim game is just as glorious. It makes me question why Bungie never officially developed one themselves, considering how significant the battles in space were against the Covenant ships and the UNSC that we could only glimpse at out windows or in cutscenes.
