Kysen, Firstly good job on "controlling the variables". Reminds me of some of Firespark's work. I hope others appreciate the effort.
As for "Tree Farm", I always have one. I dont play for "efficiency of time". But, ya plant da trees and get 'em when you need 'em. Choose a base locale with a hill behind it. Clear trees on that hill early, and when you've a cultivator and hoe, set up a farm. No "walls", just horizontal tiers across the hill, like rice paddies. Simple and easy. Then plant, and harvest when needed.
Takes time ONCE to create it (and I do the simple version). Then plant/harvest as required, and its RIGHT THERE by your base when you need it.
Of course, one does this in the Meadows and when harvesting one's trees, there's a mini-game. Killing greydwarves with trees as one harvests :)

Thank you and thanks for your thoughts on the tree farm :) I will probably build one in my survival world just for fun but then I'll also get a better feel of how well they work etc :)

Late game woodcutting challenge is mostly the logistics of it. I usually cut down a giant part of the forest (dont collect), then put a portal somewhere, overburden and go through portal. Place portal somewhere else and repeat. I wish they buffed the cart tho, or made a tier 2 that has more grip/is able to have less trouble carrying weight. I get that you can't move a cart full of iron, but come on let me travel up a slight slope with more than 1 meter per minute with a cart filled with wood
Kysen2022/01/06(木) 01:02
Totally agree about the carry weight of the cart. I also think it would be great if carts went through portals so long as they don't have any non-teleportable items in them haha

what i do is the following, plant a tun of tree next to the elder boss and then i spawn him, idk the rates but is fun
Kysen2022/01/06(木) 01:03
does sound fun! I was thinking about doing a video looking at bosses and getting them to cut down trees
Gil from TO2022/01/05(水) 09:15
Seriously, are we not doing phrasing anymore?
Kysen2022/01/06(木) 01:03
lol Archer is such a great show :D

Love your Vids, I made a terraced tree-farm that I really like, nets me over a cartful every planting and minimizes the amount of running I have to do between axe swings. I have to run another test but this seems to work best for normal wood as the ROI in seeds for fine wood and core wood seems to be significantly less. And it did take forever to build. Thanks for the vids, I appreciate the work you do and the continued inspiration to keep playing Valhiem!
Kysen2022/01/06(木) 01:04
Sounds great! I definitely think I will need to trial a tree farm idea in the future! Thanks mate, glad you like the vids :)
Melma2022/01/05(水) 08:38
Another method: Find all the small villages and buildings scattered around, setup a workbench and start deconstruction - will get you more wood than you think. If you can find lox close to another biome with normal trees, you can use them like the troll, and if you get 2 or 3 chasing you, they will clear out a blackforest like bulldozers. Personally i plant trees in a ring around my base. I chop the ring and replant. Where ever i get a full inventory im still right next to my base, and i can even overencumber and just waddle the few feet back to a chest.
Kysen2022/01/06(木) 01:08
True, thank you for this :)
GGrNoob2022/01/05(水) 08:24
Actually the fastest way to harvest wood can be done with any level axe. The stone and flint axe will both do about 50 points of damage to a tree breaking it in 1 hit with this method, I have a video coming out soon showing how to cut down trees with a stone axe at the same speed as a black metal fully upgraded axe! Using Less durability, it should be out by Friday!
eckoness2022/01/05(水) 10:06

Wow dirty mind of mine

The most efficient late-game method I found was to tame a couple of Lox and ride them into a wooded Meadows at or near my base. They attack everything that spawns in Meadows - Deer, Boars, Necks, Greylings - and these things spawn a LOT. The Lox stomp everything and all I needed to do was pick up the wood every time I visited the area. Unlike luring a Troll, you don't need to go looking for anything or endure any risk. Nor do you even need to be present. The Lox destroy vegetation while you go about other business. The further benefit is that you get ample supplies of Boar and Deer Meat, Hides, Leather and Resin too.
But the better way overall imo is to manage Wood usage game-long. I build one base in the game, which I do just after killing Eikthyr, and that is my Wood building done for the game. I add Stone elements in Iron age but the Wood is done and dusted in Bronze Age. I also stop processing Coal as early as I can in Swamp, transitioning instead to leveling off Fireholes and collecting Coal from the Surtlings that spawn and die in the knee-deep water. That saves literally thousands of wood over the course of the game, along with hours of time. Getting your Coal ready-made instead of waiting for the Kiln to process it is a game-changer.
Then I also integrate wood-gathering into my daily chores and just add it to everything I do. For example, let's say I portal to Haldor to buy some Ymir Flesh for a Frostner later. I don't go there with treasure to sell, buy the Ymir Flesh and come home. Arriving home with an almost-empty inventory is a waste of a trip. Haldor is usually surrounded by trees so I'll chop some down while I'm there. I don't fill my carrying capacity necessarily but I do take a couple of minutes to chop maybe 40 Wood and 25 Core Wood while I'm there. If I'm exploring a new Swamp to find Crypts, I don't just run around, mark stuff on my map and come home empty-handed. If I encounter fallen trunks, old stumps or saplings that block my way in the Swamp, I cut them down. Then I arrive home with 70 Wood in my inventory, despite wood-gathering not being the purpose of the outing. Just add collecting some wood to everything you do and you'll be amazed at how much stock you build up.
It also helps to not be a hoarder. This takes some experience as, in a first play-through, you won't know what resources you will need and which not. But thereafter it should be clear. For example, I see people with an entire chest full of Withered Bones. How many times exactly are they planning on fighting Bonemass?? Because that is the sole purpose of Withered Bones, they have no other use. I collect and store exactly 10 Withered Bones in the game. Thereafter, every Crypt I clear, I open my inventory and throw all the Withered Bones on the ground before leaving. I never collect Blueberries at all, never collect Trophies, never pick up Bukeperries, stop picking up Bone Fragments when my Stagbreaker is at level 2, stop picking up Leather Scraps as soon as I have my Boar farm, stop picking up treasure once I have everything I want from Haldor, and so on. When you take only what you will use, your inventory always has slots open to add some wood. And when you only have to store a modest amount of necessary resources, you spend less wood on making chests. So it's a double-win.

Why build up when you can save the stone and just dig a giant pit to let your trees fall into? Works really well with my oak and pine Grove
Kysen2022/01/06(木) 01:06
Good point haha
MikaelKKarlsson2022/01/05(水) 06:22
Now that trees drop seeds more often I tend to have a lot of fine wood left over. Would love it if we got more basic build parts but in a lighter colored fine wood variant. Or fine wood planks for paneling.
Lance Kuebler2022/01/05(水) 04:55
I'm a big fan of kiting trolls in the early game. Between dragging out the elder fight to clear that area, as well as kiting a troll around a large area of the black forest early game, you'll get a very respectable amount to regular and core wood for your first starter base. I typically do this before I even have good enough gear to block the troll, just have to get really good at running/dodging. I also Mark out nearby copper veins and, if I have the time, drag the troll around to mine that for me as well. ?
Lance Kuebler2022/01/05(水) 04:56
As a bonus of doing this in the black forest, you can use the core wood in the charcoal burner, instead of regular wood, if you end up with too much of it.
Lance Kuebler2022/01/05(水) 04:57
That said, late game is a totally different story.... Thanks for testing everything out, good to know how to spend the time late game! ?
Kysen2022/01/06(木) 01:06
You're welcome :)
Dave Sita2022/01/05(水) 03:59
Tree farms are definitely worth the time investment IF you have the right design AND location. For my farm I chose a location in the meadows that transitions into the mountain biome. This natural change in elevation is the key! I leveled off about a dozen steps into long rows and cut a trench at the bottom at the end of the last step. I only have to cut down the perimeter of the upper step and watch the dominos fall by design. With 10 minutes I can have two cart fulls of wood dropped off inside my main base.
Lance Kuebler2022/01/05(水) 04:51
I've never actually done this, but I'd have to agree that if you took the time to set it up correctly it could really pay off. I've seen other tutorials that use a steep hill and terraces and it looks like the domino effect is quite efficient. That said, I just take the lazy route and AFK at my greydwarf farm ? (not as efficient, but takes zero effort)
Dave Sita2022/01/05(水) 06:52
I'm currently making a grey dwarf farm for (most) of the other items they drop. If I were to make a new tree farm I'd look for a similar elevation situation, but with a curve -- sort of natural parabola.
Kysen2022/01/06(木) 01:07
I think I'm gonna have to build one tbh! Lots of people are saying this haha

John Eicher2022/01/05(水) 03:08
Thanks for your videos. If you drag out the fight with the boss that gives the swamp key, he destroys the trees in the area. I then built a portal and collected a ton of wood from the area.
bigcrazewolf2022/01/05(水) 02:47
You can get fine wood early by using other trees. It does take a bit but you can get fine wood day 1 . . . if it doesn't fall on you lolk
Michael Munson2022/01/05(水) 02:44
I've always wondered what would be the most efficient way to get wood. I'm more of a minimalist builder, so I don't need loads of it, but I prefer not to spend hours getting what I need. My biggest question is, what's the difference between hacking away at large trees with an axe vs using a knife or other weapon on the saplings? I actually use the sapling method because, aside from it feeling like I get wood faster since the knife takes less stamina, I clear out the forest better so I can run around easier and see enemies/prey better. I hate running into parts of the forest that are just laden with saplings and bushes when I'm hunting deer or whatever. I've also used and Atgeir since you can stand in the middle of a few saplings and use the secondary attack to 360 clear them out.
I should try this same method of giving myself 10 minutes to clear out similar forests with axe on full sized tree vs knife/atgier on saplings. Unless that's something you would like to make a followup video on. ; )

Oscar2022/01/05(水) 09:33
Well in my experience the bushes get smashed by the falling trees so it doesn't really make sense to only kill bushes
Michael Munson2022/01/05(水) 10:09
@Oscar True. I guess, early game, the difference between needing SO many axe hits on a full sized tree vs a couple slashes with a knife on a sapling makes me feel like I'm accomplishing more. I don't usually go for bushes as they only drop 1 wood, but most saplings do 2-3 wood.
Daniel Muehlbauer2022/01/05(水) 02:37
There is also the "Lox mode" you can ride lox and just run down trees. Might be the fastest end game way.
Kysen2022/01/06(木) 01:07
I need to try this!
Ignis Deus2022/01/05(水) 02:00
Re-planting the forest sounds good in theory, but I've never had luck with saplings growing unless they are inside the radius of a workbench. I had to build a makeshift tree farm because enemies would just trample and destroy my saplings if they didn't' have a wall protecting them.
Jarod 1442022/01/05(水) 02:03
Interesting. I’ve never had a problem planting more trees near my base
questex2022/01/05(水) 01:41
Nice vid. Thanks for taking the time to do the testing. I run a small tree farm near my base that is nestled in a steep sided valley. I terraced it with a hoe (I have only recently got into iron) and by planting in rows, I can get about 150 trees in a fairly compressed space. By starting at the top, and with some careful lining up of the trees when I fell them, I can usually get them to fall into the trees below. I get about two carts from this farm. Its handy too, because I plant birch and pine near the bottom to increase fine and core wood.
Matt Lawrence2022/01/05(水) 03:22
I agree. My fortress is in a steep river valley and I was able to terrace like 5 rows high and get 2 cartloads in no time seems like. I use a ton of wood building houses all over so Ive tried all these methods and a good tree farm is ideal. You wont need to build anything if you find a nice steep hillside. If I see a troll and need wood that is a great method too though.
K- Thrash2022/01/05(水) 01:36
great video. One minor correction though. You don't need a metal axe to chop down core wood. You can go straight to the dark forest as soon you craft a stone axe and give them pine trees da business... you'll likely die to a troll or a swarm of greydwarves, but you can do it.
Andreas Larsson2022/01/05(水) 01:21
Best way I found was using a portal from my base to the forest. It saves on the walking distance and I don't need to use carts. Once I've cut down all trees around the portal I simply move it further into the forest
