I just love the beginning monologue about 18th century warfare.
Dude. Muskets were hilariously inaccurate. The powder used back in the day made a lot of smoke and a lot of fire. Most of it ended up in your face so people turned their heads when shooting. There was also a delay from pulling the trigger to the actual shot firing adding to the inaccuracy.
They were basically two formations of two gigantic shotguns pointing at each other.

And dying for your country was considered honorable
k van Noort2022/12/20(火) 04:34
@squidwardo also it wasn't considered optional

Even with the hindsight, large formations definitely are an inferior tactic over not fighting directly in my opinion. I have no real proof that there were a lot of other reasons than inaccuracy that made large formations remain even after small arms introduction to military thought, but it's more likely that the lack of communication, desire to have quick control over the army in battle, and the idea of winning a decisive battle. I don't disagree about black powder smoothbore muskets being inaccurate, long to reload, and blinding, smokescreen, but my opinion is that: large line formations were not good ideas but may have been required, there was more than small arm inaccuracy that popularized line formations like the command having quick manipulation of the army or military tradition.
Really, I have no idea if there's a way to defeat a line formation without one in reality.
I would like to think there was a better mechanism, a better way, a paper to someone's rock using 18th century tools.

@mk Kk I like your reasoning and I agree. But 18th century warfare was always going to be 18th century warfare. They were using their weapons as deadly and as tactical as they could. The only thing that could defeat it was 19th century technology
Which is what we saw during the American Civil War.
The American Civil War had a tremendous number of casualties.
Much thanks to the Minié Ball and rifled muskets. Line formations were still used because of tradition and tactics had not yet caught up with technology. All of a sudden muskets were accurate up to and including 200m. Some specialized muskets up to 300-400m.
The delay in firing was almost eradicated through technological breakthroughs. The black powder used was of much higher quality and it even started to come prepackaged with the musket ball. An accurate measurement for maxiumum of effect and minimum of failure.
And still they stood line facing line and blasted away.
Same thing happened with the Maxim machinegun and WWI.
Wave attacks against a literal bullet hose.
Madness. But tactics adopted.
Eventually.
Same with drones in the Ukraine.

@high2death I want to say right after i posted I realized that line infantry and all the formations are tools that work well at one thing and can be countered with another. Totally right about the technology changing before us so fast and before too.
Thank you for the conversation and mini facts from the American Civil War.
I realized how naive I was being thinking about this topic.

Idk, I find the vector as a weapon that I trust a lot, after all this is tarkov, a shot in the face and I put you to sleep, and with the high fire rate and low recoil is super easy to get those heads.
