1. sound is really underwhelming

I still absolutely despise how the "doomed state" mechanic works. it comes in way too early, and looks like shit because its a weird hud glow rather than something like flames coming out of every crevice of the vehicle. I honestly think they should just remove it entirely, or push it back so the doomed state kicks in when the vehicle WOULD have exploded in a previous game, so those few seconds are actually EXTRA, rather than it feeling like its cutting your vehicle play time in half. And also the visual changes would be nice, but given how hud heavy the game is, I doubt they would ever do that

It’s better but still a ways to go to match halo 3’s. Need more cascading explosions like the wraith where one part explodes, then another, then the rest, and also more flaming debris effects that have that “stray fireball” effect separating from the main explosion. Also some (not all though) vehicles could do with scattering into more pieces like the chopper for example. The infinite mongoose does a good job of this

I'm trying to find positive things here but it's so hard. Simple things I can point out is that in Halo 3 the vehicles had minor secondary explosions with much better sound quality and visual pop. With infinite it's weird the vehicles turn red which cover up the vehicle damage. The transition between damaged and dead is just way too sudden, it's a singular pop explosion which feels a little dull. For visuals I wish the debris would stick around much much longer, also they really need a better fire effect, I don't know how to describe the fire but it looks too big? Not as transparent? Off colour? Something like that. As for sound I was never a fan of the explosion sounds. They don't have that compressed crackle sound. It's like saying "Boom" and then saying "Boom" but angerly and feeling a shockwave.

Infinite needs that modular crumbling from H3. Shooting the front of something should not affect the back. There needs to be visual and geo indicators of vehicle damage. Putting a burst into an almost pristine ghost and sending it straight into the generic doomed state feels really cheap and underwhelming.

also: in halo 3, there are still some parts on destroyed vehicles you can damage! examples: right wing on the ghost, machine guns on the hornet, the engine and rear wings on the wraith etc

I have always disliked the doom state stuff because it seems to have taken away from the visual cues of damage that was used previously. The old vehicle “death” animation sequences seemed a lot more intentional, less Lego-falling-apart and more “this machine is rupturing from the inside out because of a lot of damage”.

Edit: to be completely fair to 343 here, I actually think the Mongoose stuff is an overall improvement. I think the sounds are wonderful, though they could use more of that crunchy metal sound, and the carnage is pretty good. Not perfect, but definitely one of the best for the Infinite vehicle iterations

A good improvement, but still needs more crackling and flare-y sounds and secondary explosions for Banished vehicles and more metallic crunchy sounds for the UNSC vehicles. Right now they all just sound like one firework going off and kinda lacks the violence previous explosions had.

Edit: it would be good if whenever a vehicle entered doomed state, it would bellow out a big plume of fire and smoke to clearly telegraph that it's entering doom state. That red outline kinda looks a bit weird.

Their textures for fire also really suck, needs more actual yellow and orange. Less red. They have such an awkward use of the color palette.

The smoke and fire is better, just needs a nice big flash or explosion to hide the awkward despawn of parts and the swapping of good parts to destroyed parts.

I wish 343 had another year of development before releasing Infinite. Such a good foundation and fun gameplay experience that is plagued by a big lack of content and consistent support through live service. It would've a lot better if the game had proper 3 months with decent content drops instead of the extended season due to development struggles. A delay would have been better in the longterm.

Infinite is such a good step in terms of details and the Halo feel but still misses the mark on minor details that Bungie put a lot of effort in in the classic games.

Also please bring back Zanzibar 343!

I want every part of the vehicle to be destroyed just like the warthog in Infinite. The fire is ok could use some enlargement and the smoke too. The aftermath is pretty good I would say but please,remove this thing that when vehicles explode they then dissapear. That's what breaks my immersion 343,not the tank gun. Overall though,that was a large improvement to the point where some explosions I think were better in infinite than in 3 but of course h3 is a 15 year old game.

I think having everything outlined before it explodes is a bad approach too, it loojs like a photoshop layer and someone hit "fill" with the paint bucket.

There are other ways to indicate things are about to explode - look at Destiny 2's Hydra explosions when they fall to the ground, a piercing glowing orb of light from inside with god rays shining out before BAM.

You could have a singke light coming from insude the vehicle getting brighter and brighter before the explision. The current opaque system have the same immersion killing effect that spartain outlines have.

The doom state is just way too slow. It takes away from the old brief vehicle shutdown and subsequent explosion. The sounds of the doom state and the lack of physical visual effects leading up to the doom state is really lacking.

It still doesn't look as good as it did in previous halo games. It still feels like it suddenly goes from being brand new to destroyed. There are no bits breaking off as you damage the vehicle, it only all breaks apart at the end.
And how is it that the destroyed bits disappear as soon as you look away from them in infinite while most of the stuff in previous halo games don't despawn until a lot later.

They also hqppened in stages. The wraith would stop antigrav, fall to the floor - the hood would blow off followed by the sides, then the top in a slectacular blinding blue fire and a plume if smoke rising from the battlefield.

Halo 4-infinite is just "poof" and done, then despawn. It absolutely kills the immersion. Theres no scrap metal littering the place, it feels like everything is just plastic fischer price toys and not war machines.

There needs to be the visual phases of damage, like smoke when it's halfway destroyed and fire with the smoke when it's 3/4 way destroyed. The red outlined destruction sequence just isn't the same/true to the original.

It’s hard to tell the difference, it would have been probably better to see a comparison between the old explosions and the new ones, but they do seem a bit better.

The real question is how does the Phantom explosion look, since that might be one of the worst aspects to the campaign. Which is funny considering there’s an entire segment of a level dedicated to destroying them.

The front of the Ghost should definitely come off.
The wraith should split apart down it’s mid section horizontally.
The banshee seems to just be disassembling so making it look more broken would be a good improvement.
The chopper is great.
The warthog works well but I don’t think there’s enough debris.
The mongoose is great.
The wasp is good.
The scorpion is great.
Overall more bits should be able to be shot off.
But so far so good 343

Halo 3 had the best explosions. Someone said they feel weightless, but I think the real magic is that they feel big and powerful. The contrast is dialed to 11 and the bright white light is almost blinding - giving them oomph and presence whenever they go off.

Since Halo 4, theyve felt like firecrackers. No real impact or lasting impression. I miss the explosions that seared the image in your brain

Also, you know how 3's explosions happened in like stages? What if the doomsday state saw something like that and then the final explosion was like one big finale like its been in this game so far?

Your chassis starts exploding and that doomsday sound starts ramping up and then a loud boom and a massive explosion finish the vehicle off.

I really want destroyed vehicles to linger for longer because it's so cool when you use one as cover. Always reminds me of halo wars when you hug the frame of a burning warthog taking cover from enemy fire kinda like how you could garrison your troops behind a warthog or a fallen pelican in those games

These explosions REALLY need to emit some light, I think that’s a big part as to why do they still look so underwhelming. When the explosion happens, the surroundings stay unaffected and bland. Look at Halo 3 for comparison, it’s the combination of great FX, lighting, and sound that make it so satisfying.

Lackluster particle effects, Lackluster environmental decals ,and scorch marks, lackluster physics, lackluster sound, and animation, and ultimately awful just awful despawn rates and lackluster choices for the vehicle models.


Halo 3 had a better Warthog, Mongoose, hornet/flyingunsc vehicle, and scorpion Those are just the ones I can think of.

The vehicle health and red glow destruction thing is also still a horribly bad addition that should be removed in favour of what we had before.
All vehicles in Infinite do the exact same thing with the exact same sound, in Halo 3 every vehicle explodes in a unique and interesting way.

Seems like it's a placeholder more than anything, fire isn't unique to faction and idk if it's just me but it looks like there's no "source" for the placement of the fire unlike the Reach clips, like they were haphazardly put there. I don't want this to come across as a negative because it's still an improvement but it does just look like it's a stepping stone for whatever they have planned next.

I dislike the red glow of the doom state but the sound of the doom state is great. maybe add different doom state sounds for different faction vehicles. also multi staged explosions are great

I like the look more now, even if the fire still feels a little too 2D around the edges, but the sound of the actual explosion needs to be improved. I've heard doom state glow is tied to player outlines so that's not so bad, and the beeping is fine. Maybe change the beeps to something more alien. Ghost should definitely still shake violently like in older games, and the blue flame for them just felt better instead of everything being the same colors.

Glad to see the effects getting better, I hope they continue to look and sound better as the season goes forward. I'm a huge fan of the Chopper explosion so far, very large blast radius.

I've watched the explosions for a while, and now I know why they work: Because a vignette (darker corners) spawns in on the user's screen when looking at the explosion. This helps make the explosion seem bright and in-your-face, like Halo has been.

In Halo Infinite, a massive initial outburst of red energy comes from the Banished vehicles. This makes the explosion look smaller, since the rest of the actual explosion isn't that big.

What 343 needs to do is try to use this darkening-corners along with adding VARIETY to the vehicle explosions. So far, the Chopper has the most unique explosion thanks to its forerunner-esque FX. The Banshee, Wraith and Ghost all look too similar. Instead of a white-red blob of energy exiting, use a cloud of plasma and electricity for one vehicle, and for the other use a large fire with some of the good ol' white-red blob. But it has to look like plasma, otherwise it's just a blob.

For help, merely either ask Halo fans or use footage from previous games. It's your IP, use it to your advantage.

Glad 343 are also reworking these aspects a bit, usually games cement in stone these types of things and never change them. Hope to see more of these!

It looks much better I just hope that in customs we get an option to disable the countdown mechanic so vehicles just explode like in previous games. I also wish chunks stayed around longer I like chunks I like the idea of fighting in the wreckage of a big vehicle fight for longer.

It's def gettin there but in H3 some vehicles had a couple more explosions in areas where they slowly fall apart like the Wraith, Warthog, or Scorpion. Also the Scorpion still feels stiff in its explosion. The explosion sounds are also still weak. There are a couple more things but that's the main thing for me rn. Better but still not there.

First off, much better then the first explosions.
But a more fluid buildup would be a very good thing indeed.
Maybe more important: the fire on the Banished vehicles need to be blue again, what do they run on? Gasoline?

I have to say, the Warthog and Chopper explosions actually look better then Halo 3's
