Throw the food under their heads on the outside of the pen. If you built it like I showcased in the guide I made, then you want the food to be as close to the wall as you can get it (Carrots work best)
Replacing the pens front half walls with beams seem to work better, as the food can slide into that sweet spot better.

I feel pretty defenseless now after culling off my boars, hopefully the greydwarves don't come back for revenge. xD
