Thanks for this, I have my bow skill up to 100, no cheats, and usually just sneak-snipe them, this kind of combat stresses me out too much, plus you loose 5% of skills when dying.

You limited yourself a lot even considering Pre-Plains gear... No tasty mead, slow armor (no root set or at least root harnesk for pierce res), no frost or obsidian arrows, no atgeir, carrot soup instead of turnip soup... I could go on. This is a challenge within a challenge, props to you.

Generally I use the Draugr fang for the whole operation. Usually I have a bunch of cheap wood arrows and a set of "sh** hits the fan" ammo (frost arrows, obsidian arrows or something like that). Retreat (not in a straight line to avoid spears) and just shoot arrows into the fulings. Knockback should be mostly good enough to keep them away but sprint away if needed.
Usually I don't like getting on top of boulders since that will severely restrict mobility and makes one prone to spear attacks.
If one really wants to play it safe: Don't be in the plains if you don't have bonemass available. There's always the chance the wolf hunt event can be triggered which can be dangerous even when wearing current end game gear.

Lots of dear skins and bones in the Fuling building pieces. Cleared and demolished my 1st base the other day with my bow from the top of a rock they couldn't walk on to.
