i think this change to ballistas was a good middle-ground. people seem to want the ballista to be perfeft base defense, but it seems likely that iron gate doesn't want them to be a perfect defense, just a good assistance option that isn't too OP.

"Added hanging royal jelly piles as an indicator..." confused me as well. But after seeing your video (at 1:30 to 1:36) it finally made sense to me. The hanging jelly piles are there to indicate where the "floor" jelly piles will respawn when the time is right. Everywhere there is a hanging jelly pile, the jelly will drip down and eventually create a floor jelly pile. This means you don't have to guess whether a dungeon room will spawn royal jelly or not.

The trophy based target system is frankly quite terrible.

I'd rather see 500 gold being payable to a Dwarf to have them stand there controlling the ballista, and making it act like a Wolf: Attacking all enemies.
Maybe it makes the ballista also require food to run.
Maybe you could break down a "dumbfire autoballista" and build an alternative "smart dwarf-controlled manual (but still effectively autotargeting) ballista" for the same resources.
Point is it should attack all enemies and not my friends, and this trophy nonsense is not the right solution to anything even if you wanted to achieve something more demanding than that.

The solution to Ballista is only a half measure. They need a toggle for "All Hostile" "All" and then also specified with Trophies. Done.

I am sure they do NOT want to do that. Like, they very specifically do not want that design in their game. Doing that would remove almost all combat challenge from the game. I know that's what so many casual gamers want, but they don't want a casual game. Sure, they need to bring in some number of people who tend to be causl ex mode gamers, but to many and the game loses its soul.

This ballista change is so dumb. They literally already have WARDS in the game, that allow you to register at the ward to be able to access items in the area. Just use the same system for the ballista. It's already coded. Register at the ballista, no more getting shot by it. Simple as that.

I don't understand why all these comments are mad about this ballista change. Does it make them more useable? Slightly. Does it really fix them as a base defense? No, and they never will. If they make ballistas general purpose defense tools, then they may as well just remove raids completely.
And it's not like it isn't already possible to make your bases basically raid-proof with proper design foresight as soon as you can get access to iron. Walls made of sheer cliff terrain and 2 trenches around it will keep all grounded enemies from being able to do damage. And a Stone or Iron roof will keep any current fliers other than gjalls from breaking through even in a raid. But ballistas don't really solve that, since they can't aim all that high.

I think by the time you get to the point you have ballistas you earned the right to "ignore" raids. The ballistas are still clumbsy and miss, and a lot of the player base doesnt want a vertical cliff around their base with a moat making the entire place look god awful

@Ender Elohim What I'm saying is that they are deliberately putting limitations on the ballista so that they don't just dominate any and every raid, making raids pointless (other than the effortless loot drops they would give). So a good ballista design makes raids pointless to even still have In the game.

Ballista still sucks. It’s just a bunch of monotonous busy work to run around and administer the trophies. Honestly how much PVP is there in this game really? Why would we want to shoot our friends or ourselves? This is beyond stupid and those who want it to shoot players are either trolling or huff paint.

i was really hoping that they would make it so that the ballista could be programmed to target everything that isn't registered by the ward (so if you and your friends are registered in the ward, the ballista's wont keel you), and also make it so that the ward itself can reprogram every ballista in its radius to target specific enemy types simultaneously. as it is now, it didn't fix anything at all, they just made programming it more of a pain in the @$$.

Sorry but the ballista target system is absolute trash. Would a weapon only target one specific creature/enemy? Of course not. The trophy system is dumb. Why not just have settings on it that you can turn on/off - all enemies, player, no player. Pets are not enemies so should NOT be targeted. I'm not even sure why you would need to shoot a player at all. Who wants to build and place a dozen ballista or more all around your base just to cover all threats? If ballista only targets one type and the enemy spawns further away by another ballista with different trophy then both are useless. ?♀

Not sure why you'd need a dozen or more. By the time you can even make ballista, only mist lands monsters should be a threat. Maybe plains enemies like Lox. That's it. Anything else you should be able to easily kill or otherwise defend against.

Best trkck I've seen for that is to build wood gates in front of the ballista, and only have the gates open when you are at base.

I am a modder, I've played around making my own dungeon respawner. If anything how the dungeon loading is like in previous versions of Valheim, you have to walk away from the dungeon far distance somewhere around 25 meters, then walk back to the dungeon in the BepInEx console you will see when the dungeon is reloaded and this will do the respawning. This is because of the Awake() command in Unity and how its all setup. Dungeon is high above the player already loaded somewhere around 4000 meters on the Y axis above the player. Walking away from the loaded chunks and back will cause it to reload

I think a good way to do ballistas is have a chest you can open on the ballista with 4 or so slots in it. Put 1 trophy of each mob you want it to target (limited to 4 or so mob types). This would make collecting trophies more rewarding, and force you to build a couple more ballistas to cover all the dangerous mob types.
Wooden missiles for the low level mob ballistas and black metal missiles for the high level mobs.

Dev make sure you are not lazy in your base by "accident" kill you when you build that ballista so you have to think and find the way to work around. They can just make the ballista more friendly but the game will become boring, you just sit at base waiting for a raid event and collect every loot drop. They make sure you have to go out your base to farm materials.

The ballista 'solution' is pants. Ballista are active weapons, not passive traps like sharpened stakes, and they should not be treated the same.

Because they have a design vision; they don't want perfect base defence to exist so that the player always has a role. They want the ballista to have a risk/reward trade-off. The "fix" is a compromise, but ultimately they are making the game they want to make, and they're only going to listen to your opinion if it enhances their vision for the game.

Ballista change is a step in the right direction but no even close to being done. This trophy systems is so flawed when you consider that raid events dont just spawn one type of enemy, besides a small few. Likely you will need multiple ballista to attack a range of targets- which for space and resource management sake it’s a bad idea in a survival game

I think the balista changes are a good compromise allowing the people who want their turrets to shoot at them to let them do that and the ones that want specific targets shot at to have that as well... I also think the people complaining about having the option to give them targets and not being forced to have them on "target all" lack self control. Thanks for the videos.

Listen I get it,people want changes that seem normal from a direct perspective but you can always mod the game and tweak these things yourself.And yes while the great majority of people will be satisfied just to have the ballista shoot the hostiles there is also THAT group of people that say it makes things too easy.What i learned through experience while working with people is that you can t make everyone happy and no matter what kind of decision you make there will always be ups and downs.The only thing that matters right know is that they should hurry up finishing the game getting the rest of the biomes out stop wasting so much time on so little progress .The same toxic trend that went with M&B bannerlord,which is releasing a game without integrating basic features its seems just dumb,release the whole things try to fix stuff as time goes by but give the modders all the support they need because they make every game much better.

Honestly thats my vibe with the game recently. Makes me worry for future updates adding more and more needless limits to things and unnecessary tedium. And the worst part is, it could all be fixed if they just give us a world options menu. Let us tweak things to our liking.

But once i finally found the trader to buy ymir flesh for the recipe i saw you couldnt get it, which just dumbfounded me, i understand locking the frostner til after bonemass, but the iron sledge? It just made me pissed off and confused. Now were in black metal stage and i see that they changed it back so you can buy ymir flesh before defeating bonemass, legit made me facepalm myself.

Literally everyone wanted ballistas to just target hostiles. This change is tone deaf. Who the f cares about targetting 1 mob. So you need 30 ballistas to be useful. Ludicrous and stupid.
I think the spawns are bugged right now. I had back to back Gjall spawns (about 3 minutes apart) a few days ago. Today, back to back abomination spawns (about 5 minutes real time/slept in-game).

If you watch the video carefully you'll see you're just using the trophy on the ballista and it stays in your inventory. So you can use the same trophy to configure multiple ballistas.

Ballistas can be useful in certain, probably semi-offensive, cheesy situations, but they are not worth building as a defense.
The fact that they also shoot the player when not limited to a single target type might be a fun gimmick, but it's also stupid and makes them useless for the most part.
On the other hand I have no idea how to properly fix it in a way which doesn't make it even more complicated. Just having it shoot everything except the player also seems problematic since it has limited ammo.

The Ballista tweak is over complicated, but I think it can still be functional as base defense and prey ambush hunting device, just have to keep a chest full of various trophies next to it.

If it can only target a single type of enemy, its not worth my time making. Is it really that hard for them to just add a friendly fire toggle? Then on top of that you could add a trophy still for more specific targeting, but I'd really only use it for general base defense, and since I'd have to build 1 for every type of enemy in each area its not worth even considering.

The ballista change is terrible! To have it limited to just one thing is awful and makes it rather useless as a base defense! If you have it protecting your plains base it can then only shoot fulings but not lox or mosquitoes, or trolls when you get a raid. I had hopes about the change but since I’ve gotten used to being attacked myself I’ll just keep it that way.

I dont get how they didnt use a mechanic that was already in the game for the balista? The ward mechanic. Just have the balista recognise whoever you grant it permission NOT to shoot. And hey presto. It kills everything. So stupid how they have done it.

I mean, if you’re building these things it’s probably for a base you truly really very much care about. So you’ll probably end up having more than one of these things protecting it anyway + the usual strategies to keep enemies at bay (giant holes around the base, spikes, etc.). I don’t think it’s that big a deal having to build more than one. Build like 3 to keep the biggest strongest dudes at bay (trolls, goblins) around the base and do the usual things for everything else. The game isn’t supposed to be easy. You’re supposed to put in * some *work.

It was technically one of the most limited resources in the game. If you had cleared all the Mistlands dungeons before, you'd eventually run out after making a lot of food. Now that broods spawn after beating the Queen, that also made it unlimited so it isn't as necessary, but I see it as a good change.

The Ballista solution is a suck solution imo. What I want is for it to not target friendlies if PvP is turned off. If PvP is on? sure lets use a trophy, but also let us use multiple trophies. I do not want to have to have multiple ballista's with each one targeting a separate target. So I will continue to use a mod to get the type of action out of the ballista I want.
Oh and of course they removed the Queen Cheez! lol. The fight looked hard enough with how often and fast she attacked with all of that knockback that solo Mele looked very difficult.
I can still see the need to fight her near the entrance so as to be able to dip out if you just get caught with too much damage from her and adds to heal up or ever wait for one of your powers to finish recharging or to regain your rested buff.
What I do wonder is IF she flees (like if you duck into the alcove to fight off some adds). Does she start to regen health right away or how long do you have until she does? God forbid she resets!! I would revolt at that lmao.
